Five Things I Hope to Teach my Daughter…

My dear sweet daughter, Elise –

There will come a time when you will be ready to leave our nest to venture out into the world so you can find your place and purpose.  My mother raised my sisters and I to be strong, independent and loved women, and it is my hope that when it’s your time – you’ll be ready and confident in your strides…

I’ve learned a lot, experienced a lot, and witnessed a lot over the years.  Bits of wisdom came along the way, as well as a lot of tough mistakes and lessons learned.  As you grow older and mature over the years, I hope these 5 things help you be the best *you* you can be:

1.  As soon as you humanly can – master the skill of multi-tasking, scheduling & juggling life.  As a woman, you will always wear many hats.  Sometimes it’s not fair and sometimes, it will overwhelm you.  You will manage five tasks at once…always.  And you will get the least amount of sleep of anyone in your home… But I will teach you this art over the years, and I promise you – it will serve you (and all those around you) well.

2.  I will spend the next 20+ years teaching you what to look for in a perfect partner.  And you will learn from your own experience too…  But one thing is certain:  find a man that both respects you and adores you.  One can not come without the other…  And yes, you will go your entire lives working through your differences and choosing your battles, but the exact chemical makeup of your love must and should be defined by equal parts of Respect and Adoration.  You deserve no less, my sweet girl…

3.  You’ll hear this more times than not in life, especially from me – Find your passion.  Then be really, really good at it.  Then find a way to make a living from it.  Many will tell you to work hard in school with the goal of a well-paying profession.  And in your spare time – maybe you can carve time for your interests.  But I will tell you that life is too short to not do what you love every.single.day.  It truly is.  So take it from me and dedicate your life to dreaming big doing what you love most.

4.  You will be defined by so many things in life…  By what you do.  By where you come from.  By what skin color you have.  By who you surround yourself with.  You’ll spend many years figuring out how you want to be defined and how you want to make your mark on this world.  But I sincerely hope to show you that all of those things – though characterizing – will not define who you are.  Be kind. Be civic-minded.  Be generous.  Be thoughtful.  Make an impact on those around you, and I promise your life will portray a life of meaning.

5.  And lastly and most importantly – Come home.  A lot.  Bring your spouse, your children, your loved ones.  And share your life with me every day through whatever medium consumes you.  Never will I stop teaching you, stop caring for you, or stop loving you.  Ever.

Love,

Mom

Session Share: Little Miss Freddie, 2 Years Old

With a name like Frederica, I knew we’d be fast friends…

A peak at some of my favorites from our 2 year session this past Fall.  I love that I’ve been following this little girls biggest milestones since birth.

Reindeer Dust Children’s Book | Commercial Photography

Not too long ago, I received a call from a past client about a new children’s Christmas book she was launching this season.  Being a mother of young children, my eyes immediately lit up!  I am always on the look out for favorites to add to my children’s library, especially from local authors.  It makes it even more special when I have the opportunity to work with the author to create imagery she can use to help promote the book.

We played around both in studio and on location for a collection of styled and lifestyle photographs.  I especially loved sampling the the reindeer dust after the photographs were taken – I can see my kids gobbling it up on Christmas Eve!  Such a fun and sweet book I hope every family takes home and reads to their children this holiday season!

Chaffee’s Garden Shower/Sip & See

There are far few things better in life than celebrating a dear friend and the birth of her beautiful boy.  Chaffee and I have been friends for a long time, and one thing that I know well about her is that she loves to show her close friends how special they are, but she rarely likes to be the recipient of equally thoughtful gestures.

Which is precisely why her sister Kiery and friends – Jany, Kristin, Lesley and I -collaborated behind her back to plan a surprise shower for Chaffee.

“Frogs and Snails & Puppy Dog Tails. That’s what little boys are made of.”  This was such a fun theme to plan a shower around.  Since Chaffee was expecting her 2nd son and we knew there was nothing more she loved than spending quality time with her family in their garden, we went to work planning a summer garden party for Chaffee’s baby shower.  But like many things in life, it didn’t quite go as planned.  The day before her scheduled surprise shower, Chaffee’s doctor put her on bed rest… And so we all scrambled to reschedule the shower (still without her knowing, which proved to be incredibly tricky with many out of town guests) for this Fall.

In the end, it could not have been a more perfect celebration of this very special baby and family.  Klaus John entered this world in early October and Chaffee’s dear friends and family gathered for a special Sip & See celebration to meet him.  It could not have been a more perfect day…

The details of this event were very special… I always enjoy putting together sweet events, but this has been one of my favorites.  Here are the invitation suites that went out to each of Chaffee’s guests.  They were printed on a 120lb thick card stock and the 2 inserts were bound together with a coordinating belly band.  The envelops were lined with a beautiful garden green liner and finished with fun little boy vintage stamps.  Loved the way they turned out!

Since the Sip & See included the little man, we tried to incorporate thoughtful details with his name – like these hand lettered bunting decor pieces. Love.

We hosted the event in Kiery’s backyard – the perfect backdrop for our garden themed party.

And one of our favorite elements of the shower was having our guests help build Baby Klaus’ library.  Everyone would choose a favorite book to dedicate to Baby Klaus, then they would take a photo of themselves and inscribe a sweet message to him.   We all had a lot of fun with this!

And how adorable are these mud pies?  Jany & Lesley woke up at the crack of dawn to make these sweet favors for our guests to take home to their little ones.  Each were filled with layers of sugary goodness!

In the end, it was the perfect celebration of this little man’s arrival and his wonderful family.  There is no amount of words or gifts that can show them how much they are loved…

FAQ: Family Day Sessions

Clients often ask me what my favorite ages to photograph are. For me personally, I adore the baby stage (which is why I created the One Year Plan). After the first year, subsequent years I love capturing are the 18 month milestone, 2Y, 3Y, 4Y, then 5Y portraits.

After their 5th birthday, I then recommend my clients participate in our annual Family Day mini-sessions. I designed these sessions so that I could continue capturing my past clients’ families annually in a way that is fun, beautiful and relatively painless ;)

FamilyDay2014_blog3

We just opened up 2014’s Fall Family Days, and we have already sold out almost all spots to past participants.  Here are the details:

Dates:
Saturday, 10/4 (sold out)
Sunday, 10/5 (sold out)
Saturday, 10/11 (sold out)
Friday, 11/7 (just a few spots remaining)

Details:  Every year, we invite all our clients and past clients to spend time with us at a park. We schedule back-to-back mini-sessions designed to capture beautiful individual and family portraits against the glittering Fall leaves. Alice will then apply her signature toning and black & white techniques on her favorite 10-15 images and burn each of them on CD (printable up to 5×7) for families to make as Christmas cards, gift portraits, and to archive for their own personal use.

Typically, our time together is incredibly high-energy, quick, and a lot of fun for the little ones.  Within 15 minutes, I work to create around 10-15 stunning portraits of your family.  The results are timeless…

Below are samples of a family I’ve photographed for many years.  We were able to achieve these images (and more!) within our 15 minute window.  I just adore them…

Session Share: Georgia Mae, 6 Months Old!

Greetings, friends!

I am finally getting back into the swing of things.  Life as a family of 4 is settling down for us, and our team is busy preparing for one of the busiest Falls we’ve ever had.  It feels really good to be back with my clients.

Before going on maternity leave in late July, I photographed a number of families in Athens.  This blue eyed beauty is the newest addition to the Knox family, and I just adore her name – Georgia Mae.  She has a striking resemblance to her older brother Neely!

And then there were Four…

These past couple of weeks have been a blur of happy moments.  Little moments that I am cherishing now as I’m living through it, but moments that I know won’t be so vivid in the not-so-distant future when our family is beating at a different rhythm.  That is why I’m grateful for these moments captured on whatever device I have on me… Truth be told, I haven’t taken out my DSLR once since little Elise was born, but I don’t feel like her first two weeks have been ill-recorded in any way.  On the contrary, I’m thrilled.

Late into the evenings, as I’m going on about 2 hours of sleep and she’s fed, burped, changed and swaddled… I catch myself just holding & staring at her and wanting desperately to remember just how tiny she is.  And how sweet she smells.  She’s an easy baby that never cries or demands our attention other than the expected 3 hour feed.  And I can’t help but to sit there and smile at my little blessing of a baby that I love more than I could thoroughly express.

The late evenings are our time together, just she and I, and no matter how sleep-deprived I am – it’s one of my favorite times of the day.

Here is a peak at some of the little happy moments caught with my iPhone during Elise’s first 2 weeks of life.  I caught myself getting back to work and the swing of things very early after she was born (2 days & at the hospital), but my attention quickly diverted when we all returned home and I realized my toddler needed my attention more than our businesses… It’s been a good adjustment for us all.

And who can forget my wonderful NAPCP girlfriends who coordinated a newborn photo shoot for Baby Elise at 1 week old.  Such an amazing blessing to have them all in my life!

Elise_1_blog Elise_2_blog

The Parks are taking it slowly these days, enjoying our little family one day at a time.  We’re all in love with her and her delicate personality, and we’re taking in every bit of her as much as we can.

For those of you who asked, I’m set on my daily chronicling of Baby Elise just as I did for Project Lyon.  Can’t wait to share them with you all….

Session Share: Eleanor, 1 Year Old
