Kyu and I have been thinking about Growth a lot lately. Growing our family, growing our team, growing our membership base with NAPCP, growing our client base, etc etc.
The list of what we want to grow keeps growing….
But with Growth comes the enormous challenge of executing it all beautifully and seamlessly, without disturbing our peace.
The above thought by Norman Vincent Peale really resonates with me now as we face our current challenges. My friends know me as an eternal optimist – it’s a character trait I hope to pass down to my children. But now more than ever, I’m working hard to shoulder this positive energy for our team as we continue to grow. I love how this quote really wraps it all up nicely for me….
I had the immense pleasure of hosting a sweet baby shower for my sweet baby sister last weekend. Irene has loved babies and wanted one of her own ever since I could remember. I think she would have stolen Lyon from me, had she not known I would have hunted her down and beat her silly And needless to say, she’s been the most amazing Auntie to my little boy a sister could ask for. He shrills with utter delight at the sound of her name, “Aiyee” (Auntie in Chinese).
When Irene and Benji found out they were expecting, we went straight to work on their baby shower! They shared with me their love of “Twinkle Twinkle LIttle Star”…. a song I sing every night to Lyon for bedtime, so it became the perfect theme for us to work around.
My side-kick designer Kristen Smith and I collaborated quite a bit on the details of the event. When I begin drawing out the details from scratch for any event, I think my mind goes wild and I reach an all-time creative high. Event planning and design is probably my 2nd joy after photography. I love designing something from scratch and seeing ideas that we have come to live. Irene’s shower was no exception.
Here are a few details from the event that I adore:
A twinkle twinkle shower invite for all of their friends & family:
We created a special backdrop for our star themed dessert area. I love the way it turned out.
The balloon backdrop came out perfectly…
Some additional details that we loved… All of the food, decor and flowers were DIY elements that we all worked together on. I am especially proud of the star cheese cake desserts – so pretty and delicious!
My lovely sister and myself…just a few weeks behind her with baby #2 This is going to be a great year for babies!
I got pretty lucky in the husband department, and I couldn’t possibly ask for more. But…… if you twisted my arm and asked me what would make a lady swoon, any of these gift items would do the trick this Valentine’s Day!
1. Anthropologie One Love Travel Kit: Beautiful Beauty Products. What could be better?!
2. Keds Sneakers: Just plain adorable.
3. Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Camera: For any creative, it’s the perfect accessory.
4. Fotostrap: A beautiful photo strap that gives back? It’s the perfect combination.
5. Jcrew Excursion Vest: I’m in the vest season of my life now. It covers my awkward (not quite a bump) belly so well!
6. Hermes Leather Everyday Bag: If he wants to splurge on me, like “who cares about Lyon’s preschool tuition this year” splurge – this would be it.
7. Backup Iphone Charger: Because I’m always Instagramming and I always forget to close my applications….
8. Calligraphy Starter Kit: I am obsessed with calligraphy and beautifully hand-written letters. This well-crafted kit has all of the tools to get us started!
9. Macarons: So soft and subtle, but oh-so-delicious…
This is one of my favorite times of the year. The winter season is usually a slow one for client sessions, so I love that I’m able to devote a little more time on personal projects that are truly meaningful to me and my son’s school.
My team and I just wrapped up a very special class project for Lyon’s preschool class. A couple of wonderful parent volunteers and I met last month to photograph these adorable 2 year olds in front of a black roll of seamless paper. What resulted was one of the funnest and coolest books I’ve had the privilege of putting together.
This has truly been a labor of love for all of us involved. We spent nearly 75 hours perfecting every page of this book:
- photography by myself, props and styling by Chaffee & Emily
- initial retouching and editing done by me
- in depth retouching, color correcting, overlay of chalk background, text and copy design by our Production Manager Erin. Every page had several, upon several layers of photoshop work done – ensuring the color and and tone was consistent throughout.
- hand-illustrated cover flap design by our talented designer Kristen. I just love how that turned out!
- 2nd day of photography and styling by Chaffee and I to ensure every child was equally documented in the book.
I find so much joy in collaborating on projects like this. This book will be sold on auction night to the preschool parents, and 100% of the proceeds will go back to their classroom. All while each of the children find delight in flipping through the pages and reading their ABC’s and seeing all of their friend’s faces.
That warms my heart so much…

Atlanta News, Weather, Traffic, and Sports | FOX 5
Last week, I was invited to be a guest on Fox 5′s Good Day Atlanta and chat with viewers on simple ways to personalize their space for the Holidays.
Now. I fully admit I am no Martha Stewart… And you can walk into my home today, and I promise you will not find my home immaculately decorated to the brim with festive DIY creations. But what I do love is finding simple and *easy* ways for busy moms to create custom pieces that bring a lot of that heart to their space.
The segment went rather quickly, so I included some images below to show some of the individual pieces.
I love the way the Christmas Card Display turned out. Pieced together by hand the night before by my darling husband and I, with whimsical chalk renderings by the talented Erin McManness.

Every once in a while, I’ll get asked to photograph corporate headshots. Because I primarily photograph babies and sweet families, I generally graciously turn down these jobs. But every once in a while, a project or company that I really believe in and am excited about approaches me – and I throw my rule book out the window. This is one of those cases.
Kristin, who is the founder and President of BravePR, and I have worked together on several occasions for her children’s photographs. She also helps us with many of our communication needs for NAPCP. I was naturally ecstatic to work with her team to capture them.
Aren’t they all so gorgeous?
Every year, we invite all our clients and past clients to spend time with us at a park. We schedule back-to-back mini-sessions designed to capture beautiful individual and family portraits against the glittering Fall leaves. Alice will then apply her signature toning and black & white techniques on her favorite 10-15 images and burn each of them on CD (printable up to 5×7) for families to make as Christmas cards, gift portraits, and to archive for their own personal use.
