Behind the Scenes: B Braithwaite Commercial Shoot

We just wrapped up a full day commercial shoot with 7 incredibly adorable kids & babies, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the images.  Chaffee, her mother Nancy, and I have been planning this shoot for a few months now.  B Braithwaite has some big projects underway, including a move to a new location in Buckhead next month.  Everyone’s so excited!

Here’s a peak behind the scenes today with all of the babies, fun props, outfits, stylists, assistants, photographers, mommies, daddies and nannies!  I was excited that little Lyon got to take part in this project…crazy hair and all :)

Amazing how everything came together beautifully in the end.  Stay tuned for B Braithwaite’s big move next month to see the final images!

Year in Review with the Parks

2011 was a pretty epic year for the Parks… probably one of the best years of our lives.  The start of our family, finding our dream home, celebrating birthday milestones, and all of the special little moments in between.

Here is a look at the cards we designed & sent out this year.  A fun way of remembering a pretty incredible year.

Happy 2012 Everyone!

Sleep Training Part 1: The Background

This is me and Lyon the day after Thanksgiving.

I remember Lyon being up (which subsequently meant dad & I were up) for about 5-6 hours that night, and it was a sad sad sight at breakfast the next morning.  The 3 of us were zombies – eyes sunken, no expressions whatsoever, sleep deprived and clearly not happy.

I knew something had to change.

I battled with Sleep Training and crying-it-out (cio) for months, as I was uneasy with the concept and what type of psychological damage it would have on my baby.  But after 6 weeks straight of no sleep for my family, it was time to put my fears aside and go the route that all of my mom friends said was inevitable… “You have to let him cry-it-out, Alice.  Trust me, you’re doing what’s best for your family.”

So, in hopes of this blog post helping someone…a mother like me struggling with the idea of letting her baby cry… I’ve decided to blog my experience.  I’ve broken this up into two posts because of the amount of detail involved:  (a) a little background & information and (b) my experience & the results.  Here we go…

First some background info: Lyon is 8 months old now, in the 95th percentile in weight & height, eats about 25-30 oz of formula and 9 oz of solids per day.  Clearly, he’s not starving.  He’s also teething, which I believe is what disrupted this wonderful sleeper’s slumber at night.  He went from sleeping 12 consecutive hours at night + 3-4 hours per day to maybe 8 hours at night and 2 hours per day.  This led to loss of appetite, weight loss, fusiness throughout the day and of course, sleep deprivation.

I consulted with Laura Hunter from Moms on Call prior to starting Sleep Training.  As a mother of 5, Laura has experienced it all.  She was able to guide me through this experience while providing me the “tough love” I needed to get through this.

Here’s what she wrote me:

Alice,

He can sleep through the night. He can put himself to sleep but you have not given him a chance to. Every thing we do creates habit good or bad.

If it were me, I would feed at 7/7:30pm, put him down by 7:30/8pm, awake, LOUD sound machine close by, pitch black in the room and get out. He will throw a fit for up to 1 1/2-2hrs. Then sleep for a couple and do it again all night the first night. It gets better every night. I do not worry about naps till we get through the night. Make sure you have breathable bumper pads so arms/legs do not get stuck.

The longer you wait the harder it is. But you have to do it when you are ready.

The stories I get almost daily when parents do this are amazing. Over and over it is “I cannot believe how happy he is”, “He wakes up singing now”, “he will lay in his bed for 30 mins talking to himself” etc.

You can give a small lovie if you like in the crib.

Plan B is to put him down and set a goal “I will not go in til ???” Then do not go in till set time then every few days move set time. This takes longer and to me is tougher then just doing it and getting it over with.

Laura

——

What I admittedly am HUGELY at fault is that I’m a rocker.  I rock Lyon to sleep every time.  I can’t help it – he’s so insanely cute when he falls asleep in my arms, and there’s an untold emotional connection that comes when your son feels safe and secure in your arms as he drifts to sleep.

Also, it’s easy.  I can rock Lyon to sleep in less than 90 seconds usually…

This is also where my biggest blunder is.  Sigh.  I’m supposed to put Lyon to bed awake so he can learn to self-soothe and fall asleep on his own.  If I had started when he was younger, say 3-4 months old, it would have been a lot easier.  Especially in times like this when he’s reaching developmental milestones…

In saying this, I believed crying-it-out to be so cruel.  Why punish Lyon for something that wasn’t his fault (more so, mine.  I shouldn’t have rocked Lyon to sleep for so long)?  So, I went to Laura again and asked for her support.  A few questions that I had:

Q:  What can I expect to happen over the next few days?

A:  First night is tough. They may cry on and off all night. Better and better every night.  Days may be a bit tired until through the night

Q:  This method seems somewhat cruel to me….almost like I’m punishing him for something that’s not his fault.  Will Lyon think I’m abandoning him when I don’t go to him like I normally do?  How will this affect him longterm?  Will he have abandonment issues?

A:  What is the truth? The truth is he is loved, in a wonderful family, and in a great home! It is three nights–5 nights. I would rather be miserable for a few nights than so exhausted that am not enjoying my family.

If you stay the course, and you as a family do not get your rest, you will start to become *gulp* resentful towards yourself, towards your husband, and towards your baby.  It is far worse to live that life than to try teach your child to sleep.

Q:  When he goes through his next developmental milestone (say, sitting up by himself & not being able to get back down), will I have to go through all of this sleep training again?  How will that be?

A:  Yes, but it won’t be nearly as bad.

I decided to Sleep Train in 3 phases:  (1) Sleep through the night, (2) Fall asleep on his own without rocking (3) Tie in everything for his naps.

My next post will be the reality of how it all unfolds, how/if I survive it, and what I learn from it all…  Fingers crossed, wish me luck!

Stay tuned!

Resolutions for 2012

I have never been one to make resolutions for the New Year. My reasoning? There’s no better time than the present to make positive change in your life…whether it be the new year or a Thursday in March.

I’ve thought long and hard about 2011 however, and I realized that given my new life and my new role, there simply isn’t enough time to make all of the changes I want to. By the time I formulate a plan for action, something comes up and I have to deviate to plan B.

So this year, I’m prioritizing. I’m focusing on the below and letting go of the rest… Here we go!

1. Eat healthier, lose weight, exercise, sleep & focus on self. Seems like a cliché resolution, yes? But now that I’m in my 30s and the baby weight around my hips & thighs are becoming a constant reminder that I no longer have a fast metabolism, it’s time to set some goals. Goal #1 – no more daily cupcakes. Goal #2 – drink tea instead of coffee. Goal #3 – go for a walk/jog/run daily, even if it’s 20 degrees outside. Goal #4 – fit into my old jeans comfortably, even though we all know that sweats is all the rage right now. Goal #5 – Focus on self. In between obsessing over dinner menus & Lyon’s daily caloric intake, I’m going to start paying more attention to me and how I feel.

There, I feel better already.

2. Read more. I used to read a lot… I could get lost in a book for hours; it was my escape from every day routine, and I credit reading to sparking all of the creative juices inside of me. But then life and business and baby came along, and I found reading to be the first to be let go…. And like exercise is to my husband and routine is to my son, I know I need to read this daily to keep me going.

Oh, I’m also going to blog more!

3. Be more organized. This is another resolution I’m sure all of us share… I think I’ve read about 30 articles in 5 different magazines & dozens of blogs about Organization Tips for 2012. But really – I am a mess right now, and if it weren’t for my incredibly organized husband, I would have probably lost my kid by now. So, this year – I’m taking 20 minutes every morning and every evening to organize that day and the next. I’m clearing the clutter from my office that kills my creativity daily. I’m purging off stuff I don’t need or use. I’m donating more to Goodwill. And I’m going to keep our fridge stocked with fresh fruits & veggies so I can tackle both #1 and #3. Awesomeness.

4. Take NAPCP to new heights. Kyu and I spent many late evenings in 2009 brainstorming all of the ways NAPCP could benefit child photographers and improve our industry. Our list was staggering… and quite daunting to be honest. But we’re going to push aside our fear of failure, dig deep in our resources, embrace being in the red to promote growth, and cross off all the things on our list that we’ve always wanted to do. I’m excited!

5. Go on more dates, travel as a family, schedule coffee tea with a friend. The year goes by too fast to push any of these aside…

2012 is going to be about living life to its absolute fullest, every single day…even if I have to cheat on my diet a little bit.

Cheers to that!

And then there was Christmas!

One resolution I made to myself this crazy fall season was to let go of some things so I could focus on our clients & our family.  Sadly, one of those things was blogging….and cooking and cleaning (but that’s another post).

I’ve kept up with my daily photo project on facebook, but if you missed anything, here’s a brief summary of what’s been going on:

1.  Lyon has been teething for the past 3 months it seems, but those darn teeth have yet to make an appearance.  He’s drooling, constantly running a slightly elevated fever, fussy, sleepless (which makes us allllll sleepless), and gnawing on everything.

2.  Did I mention there hasn’t been much sleep here?  Ah yes, we’re up 3 times a night, and each time – it takes Lyon about 2 hours to fall back asleep.  *yawn*

3.  We’re so thankful for this season & all of the wonderful clients we had the opportunity to work with.  Amazingly, this has been our strongest year yet…especially considering I took about 3 months off to move and for maternity leave.  Kyu and I work incredibly hard in what we do, and we’re appreciative of the clients who see us year after year and all of the new ones we meet along the way!

4.  Lyon’s 1st visit with Santa was one of the highlights for me this season.  I’ve photographed thousands of children with Santa, and it was so fun for me to finally photograph my own.  And he didn’t cry!  That’s my boy :)

5.  Somewhere along the shuffle of the season, we stopped to take a photo of the chaos.  It never fails; the list of projects, shoots, appointments, etc becomes mountainous, but we somehow manage to make it alive.

Here we are (minus Kyu who is behind the camera) last night working on our last rush of client gifts, 3 days before Christmas.  Lyon has found his mojo in the mix.  He’s at that darling age where he can sit still and entertain himself for hours (ok, more like minutes..) on paper & boxes.  And yet, he feels like he’s part of the team too.  Love that little boy of mine…

This coming year, I promise to be a lot more active here.  I’ve got dozens of posts to share, projects around the house I’ve been working on, sessions to blog, and fun stores to share about Lyon.

Until then, Merry Christmas to Everyone!

To my Clients

Dear Fall 2011 Clients:

Thank you.

Thank you for entrusting me to document your family’s most treasured memories.

Thank you for your patience as I learn to be a Mommy while keeping up with the busiest time of the year.

Thank you for not saying anything when I arrived 5 minutes late for our session with spit-up on my shirt and bags under my eyes.

Thank you for all of your parenting advice, words of encouragement, and telling me I look great when I clearly have more weight to lose.

Thank you for loving my Production Assistant Kristen and my Ordering Consultant Beth as much as Kyu and I do.  They allow me to focus on my two loves – photography & my kid.

Thank you for emailing/calling me to ask how Lyon is sleeping, eating and growing.  I never realized how much I much joy & pride I would get out of talking about my baby’s schedule & recent developmental milestone.  “Yes, he can sit still & watch while I write out the A-B-C’s!  I know, genius!!”

Thank you for demonstrating love and kindness and patience through your own families.  By photographing your most intimate moments, I’m learning to be a better mother…a better wife…a better person.

Thank you for truly humbling me.  Just when I think I have it tough, you show me that the real magic happens in between the chaos.  That life’s greatest moments occur when it’s tough.  And that Kyu and I are doing just fine trying to juggle it all.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

With sincere gratitude,

Alice

Happy Fall Newsletter!

Greetings Friends!

If you haven’t guessed it yet, some exciting news from Kyu and I! This past Spring, we welcomed our own little bundle of joy, Christian “Lyon” Park. He is growing and thriving, and to me – a constant reminder of how fleeting this time is in our lives…

In our first newsletter, I share a glimpse of what is going on behind the scenes at Alice Park Photography and the Parks. Motherhood has given me a new perspective on what I do, and I realize how incredibly important it is to document our children’s lives. I started a journal of my son’s life, and what started off as a daily photo of Lyon is quickly turning into a chronicle of love letters on motherhood and life. Read more about Project Lyon below.

This Fall, we’re busier than ever keeping up with our favorite clients and our exciting calendar of events. Please take a look below on some opportunities of getting your holiday portraits done this season!

I’ve also started a new series on clients that inspire ME. As Kyu and I learn to navigate life with sippy cups, diapers and luvies in hand, I reach out to some of my favorite clients who seem to have it all figured out! Check out Courtney’s interview below for our first Client Spotlight!

To all of our clients, friends & amazing people in our lives – we hope life is treating you well and we meet again very soon!

Happy Fall!

  1. Hi, Neat post. There is an issue with your website in internet explorer, might test this? IE nonetheless is the market leader and a good component of folks will leave out your magnificent writing because of this problem.

Project Lyon: A Summary

My little Lyon turns 6 months old today, and I’m sad because he’s growing up way too quickly…

I’m thankful for this project of mine that I’ve diligently been dedicating his first year to. Project Lyon started off as a mother’s attempt to carefully document her first baby’s life…  Now, I’m realizing that these daily tidbits I’m capturing are the journals I’m writing to my baby.  It’s my first love letters to Lyon…

If you follow me on facebook, I’ve been periodically updating friends & family with Project Lyon.  From his birth, to his first plane ride, his first taste of carrots, to everything in between.  I’m not missing a beat.

Here are some of my favorite milestones copy/pasted from Project Lyon:

Project Lyon: 30 minutes old - Our precious boy is here! Christian “Lyon” Park arrived at 6:30 pm weighing 7lbs 8 oz at 20″ long. Kyu and I couldn’t be more thrilled! Thank you all for all of your thoughts and prayers.

Project Lyon: 3 Days Old - Coming home from the hospital with little Lyon. We are so in love….

Project Lyon: 8 Days Old - Baby Lyon’s first photo shoot!

Project Lyon: 19 Days Old - I’ve never felt so needed and so important than right now. Loving motherhood.

Project Lyon: 62 days old - getting weighed in at your 2 month appointment. 75th percentile in weight, height and head circumference. Growing up too quickly, little fella….

Project Lyon: 78 days old - Thankful for my first day off from shooting in 14 days. Instead of rushing to a shoot after Lyon’s morning feeding, I got to stare as my little monkey fell back into a deep, happy sleep. Love.

Project Lyon: 82 days old - You love bathtime and I love a clean baby. We make a great pair.

Project Lyon: 88 days old - Everyone told me that 12 weeks was a fun age, but omg. I just can’t get enough of you!

Lyon is blessed with some really amazing people in his life…  In the photo above, Lyon is with his buddy Erich who is about a month older than him.  Erich’s mother Chaffee and I have enjoyed watching our boys grow up, and each time we get together – I try to capture an image of the pair.  I informally call this project “Peas and Carrots.”

Project Lyon: 89 days old - Gurgling and babbling, we love listening to you tell us about your day, Lyon! Long gone are the days of speaking clearly or cohesively. It’s all about singing & that high-pitched baby talk now.

Project Lyon: 94 days old - Well, we packed your entire room, arrived to the airport 5 hours early and apologized in advance to everyone sitting around us. This baby is ready for his first flight!

Project Lyon: 96 days old - we took a little break from the napcp retreat this morning to show you the majestic mountains of Vail Valley. It’s absolutely breathtaking here and we’re so glad you are able to experience this with us.

Project Lyon: 99 days old - BIG explosion 39,000 feet in the air. Good times.

Project Lyon: 100 days old - Our families gathered tonight to celebrate our Asian honored 100 Day Birthday. They brought strings of gold and jade, lucky red pockets for good fortune, and we cooked up a feast as we counted the many blessings in your life… Happy 100 Day, baby Lyon.

Project Lyon: 107 days old - you woke up with a slight fever this morning, so we decided to let you stay home with dad this time. So sad to travel without you, buddy. Feel better soon.

Project Lyon: 113 days old - Saturday night. Heels in the closet, hair in ponytail, not a touch of makeup on. I would not want to be anywhere else in the world than right here.

The day my baby started smiling back at us was the day I had died and gone to Lyon heaven…

Project Lyon: 117 days old - The rolls on the baby go round and round, all through the town…

Project Lyon: 122 days old - Cousins Lucas and Gabriel came to play with you today, but you slept alllll day. “Wake up, Lyon! It’s time to play!”

Project Lyon: 123 days - Your new name is Chubbs. 4 months doctors appt weighing 18lb 3oz, 26 inches long!

Project Lyon: 137 days old - Those guns. Your hair. That face! Swoon…you must take after your dad.

Project Lyon: 149 days old - Just when I think I have you and your schedule figured out, you don’t nap or eat all day. Hmmm…. back to the drawing board.

Project Lyon: 151 days old - You are a girl’s BEST accessory. I get so many compliments when I tote you around…spit up and all :) #proudmama

Project Lyon: 156 days old - It’s amazing how something so annoyingly bright and loud can make you so very, very happy.

Project Lyon: 179 days old - YUM! And when I say yum, I mean YOU!

When looking back at what I’ve documented over the last 6 months, I realize how much of my heart this little boy has.

Motherhood isn’t always so glamorous, and on the days when I just want to crawl into bed and hide, I look back at these snap shots & words, and I’m reminded how incredible this journey is.

So, cheers to Lyon.  Cheers to making it this far.  And cheers to what’s in store for us…

A Backyard Birthday

I married a pretty special man.  And when our little bundle of joy arrived, somehow this special man got shifted to the side while we changed diapers, let go of sleep, and learned how to become parents.

So, for Kyu’s 40th this year, I decided to plan a surprise birthday party for him.  Kyu is definitely not one who enjoys being the center of attention, but for one evening – the stars aligned, his dearest friends gathered, and he sat back and allowed us to celebrate him.

It was a pretty magical evening, and one Kyu admits he’ll never forget.  I feel the series below gives a good depiction of it all…

Early in the planning, I gave myself a budget and a strict timeline to complete it all so it wouldn’t interfere with our busiest season of the year.  I absolutely love event planning, but when you’re trying to juggle work & a baby, while keeping this a secret from your husband who you confide EVERYTHING with, it can be quite challenging.

In the end, I’m proud to report that I came way under budget.  For several of our vendors, I was able to leverage my photography work & time in order to barter for their service & products.  An event that may seem to have cost thousands of dollars, cost me a lot less.  A lot, a lot less….  Here are the details:

THE INVITATIONS: I hired my friend & colleague Liana Lehman Hall of Après un Rêve to help put together these beautiful letterpressed pieces.  My super talented designer Kristen and I collaborated on the design.  My vision:  evening, lights, surrounded by trees.   The finished product -

I thought they turned out perfectly…

THE SPACE: I’ve always wanted to host an evening garden party.  When Kyu and I were house hunting, I told him my only request was to have enough space in our backyard to host a party (as well as to have ample parking, be level, within walking distance to parks/restaurants, have friendly neighbors, yada, yada…  Yes, you get the picture.  I was picky ;)

Unfortunately, our backyard garden is as nonexistent as the diet I’m on now postpartum.  ha.  Our space is pretty bare now, but that didn’t stop me from working with it.

Yes, I love our dead grass and basketball court.  It had potential though, so I started sketching out my ideas…

My friend Jennifer Kjellgren introduced me to her friends at TLC Rents, and after chatting – we realized the amazing things that would result when partnering with one another.  In exchange for rental of tables, linens, chairs, etc. etc. – I could help them piece together some marketing materials for their sales team.  It was perfect.

On the morning of, Kyu’s friend James and I planned a golf outing at his club so that I could set up everything in our backyard.  TLC Rents’ truck arrived with the equipment literally 5 minutes after Kyu pulled off.

And then Kristen, JM, and I went hard at work to transform the space.  We gave ourselves about 6 hours from beginning to end, which seemed like plenty of time initially, but in the storm – proved to be nearly impossible!

And the finished space:

THE ENTERTAINMENT: I reached out to one of Kyu’s good friends Trey of Two Treys (formally Shadowood), and what do ya know?  They were in need of some cover photos for their upcoming album release!  Perfect.

They were incredible!  Worked the crowd all evening with all of Kyu’s favorite hits from the 80s.

THE FOOD & DRINKS: This is where I decided it was ok to splurge.  My mother-in-law & I schemed up a wonderful Korean menu (Kyu’s absolute favorite)…

And I hired two bartenders to help with the evening -

THE CAKE: A simple caramel flat cake from Highland Bakery adorned with creative bunting by Kristen.  Pretty!

OTHER DETAILS: I put together all of the flower arrangements myself (graciously donated by a friend & former client).  And Kristen and I pieced together these adorable buttons from Kyu’s childhood photos saying, “Lordy, Lordy, Kyu is 40!”  They were hilarious and a definite conversation starter.

There were several other details I failed to photograph because I completely ran out of time, but everything worked out flawlessly.  Here is a chronicle of the evening:

The birthday boy, completely surprised!

Ok, he admits that he had an idea that I was planning something, but he said he was blown away by the sheer transformation of our space and seeing everyone he loved there.

Some highlights from the evening:

And I can’t believe Kyu danced!  He DOES love me…

It was a pretty special night for us all… Thank you to all who could make it & help make this one of our most fondest memories.

Now, on to plan NAPCP Retreat 2012!
